Heather Huey Couture Headpieces

I recently had the opportunity to illustrate fabulous headpieces by designer Heather Huey. Heather works with stylists and designers during New York Fashion Week and her designs have been photographed by Steven Meisel and Tom Munro for Vogue Italia and Mario Testino for V Magazine to name a few. My interpretations of her headpieces were sketched from life in watercolor and finished digitally. See more on my Facebook page.

Tomboy BKLYN

Recently I worked with fashion designers, stylists and creators of TomboyBKLYN, Ashta Hunter and Elizabeth Benzing. Pairing various fashion apparel, footwear and accessories from the catwalk, I illustrated their styling visions for an editorial feature on their blog. Being part of this creative team was inspiring and great fun! For more illustrations and features check out their blog.

Illustrated Fall Trends

I was recently asked to create some illustrations, highlighting some key fall trends. It was fun keeping the shapes quite simple without the need for details and facial features. Sometimes less really is more.

Drawing Men

I really like to draw men. I like the angular lines rather than the soft more curved lines of women. However, I am asked to draw more women than men and when I sketch for practice, the models are mostly women. Here are two sketches drawn from life at the Society of Illustrators and finished digitally. Models Justin and Frank were a treat!

Sketching During NYFW at Cesar Galindo's Fashion Presentation

I had a blast sketching at the CZAR by Cesar Galindo Spring 2015 Fashion Presentation during New York Fashion Week. It was a very exciting event as I, along with 12 other illustrators, sketched backstage during the models hair and make-up preparations and then sketched during the presentation as photographers, press, bloggers, fashionistas and other invited guests swirled around us. I hope to draw more of Cesar's beautiful designs again. Thanks to Cesar and Brandon Graham of Would You Rock This. Thanks also to photographer Noam Galai and Getty Images for their kind permission to use the photo below which shows one of my sketches in progress at the event.

Coco and Breezy Eyewear

Recently, I took part in an event to sketch eyewear designers, stylists, fashion icons and identical twins Coco and Breezy. Not only are the sisters super talented, but they are incredibly nice! Here are a couple of my finished illustrations. For more, see my Facebook page.

Watercolor on Yupo

I thought I'd try out some Yupo paper. Well it's not really paper, as it's 100% polypropylene. It's so smooth that graphite glides across it creating clear and bold lines. I have to adjust to using watercolor on it though as the smoothness can make the paint run if too much water is used. As I like happy accidents though, this can be a positive! The below sketch was a twenty minute pose by a model at the Society of Illustrators

Commissioned Fashion Illustration

Recently I was asked to do an illustration of stunning Japanese model, designer, singer and celebrity Mika Ahn for her birthday. I am used to idealizing the models...making them a little bit prettier, or slimmer or more handsome or chiseled than they are - or turning drag queens into women! This commission was the opposite, I had to capture the amazing beauty that was already there. I'm very pleased with the outcome and so too are the clients.

Vanity, Vanity!

The introduction of some incredible drag queens - or rather performance artists - has proved to be very popular at the Society of Illustrators sketch night. They are so professional and can really hold a pose. Not only that, they bring with them the most amazing costumes! My illustration here is a tame version of a costume as I chose to make it into a menswear illustration but watch this space as the talent will be posing for us once a month due to popular demand. No doubt I will have something more elaborate soon! Pictured here is fabulous Vanity

Once a Tomboy....

Yes, I was a tomboy as a kid and still find myself checking out menswear on the street especially as there are some seriously creative dressers here in NYC. It was no wonder then I found myself in the garment district on a Saturday evening participating in a sketch session hosted by Tomboy BKLYN magazine. Founders and editors Ashta Hunter and Elizabeth Benzing did a fine job of styling and modeling, mixing street fashion with high end designer clothing. Their magazine includes an edgy mix of unisex, layered, casual and upmarket clothes. Thanks to Brandon Graham of Would You Rock This? for organizing the event! More of my sketches from the event on my Facebook page.

Harare at New York Fashion Week 2014

Last week I was lucky enough to attend the fashion presentation of Harare, a new womenswear label founded by Caroline Fuss. The Fall 2014 collection was a mixture of feminine glamor and street style edge. Bold pattern and texture paired with soft flowing silk. Mmn, wouldn't mind getting my hands on a few of those samples! Here are a couple of illustrations I did after the show.

Jorge Vega Umana

The last fashion sketch session of 2013 at the Society of Illustrators featured beautiful evening and cocktail dresses by Jorge Vega Umana. The evening, once again organized by Brandon Graham of Would You Rock This? was a glamorous affair and I confess I would have loved to slip into one of those dresses over Christmas! Jorge was present for the event and I think he enjoyed seeing how his designs were interpreted by so many creative individuals.
