Raul Penaranda NYFW 2017

It's New York Fashion Week once again. The cold weather didn't stop the fashionistas, buyers, fashion bloggers, press and others looking for a chance to see Raul Penaranda's fabulous new collection at his show, presented at the Society of Illustrators. I was asked to sketch the models during the event, along with three other illustrators who also happen to be great friends. It's always a bit nerve racking sketching live when people are looking over your shoulder and beside you and watching every brush stroke! After half an hour - and some very nice wine - I started to relax and just enjoy the atmosphere, the fashion and the very fact that I was sketching at the Society of Illustrators during New York Fashion Week. I used to read about fashion illustrators in NYC when I was a kid and they all had a connection with the Society. Sometimes it's good to just savor the moment!

Illustrating for Whit-NY at NYFW 2016

The New York Academy of Art was host to the fashion presentation of Whit-NY by Whitney Pozgay, during New York Fashion Week. I was asked to sketch the models wearing designs from the Spring Summer 2017 collection. A great afternoon and I also got a treat when cookies featuring my illustrations arrived at my door sometime later!

Surface Design

For those who have known me a long time, it comes as no surprise that I hail from a graphics background creating decorative design (and in some cases the three dimensional products) for the giftware, home accents, tabletop and paper product industries. The time is now right for me to combine my digital, artistic, interior and illustrative skills to pursue surface design for apparel and home furnishings. iPad Mini Scribbles

Finally I got around to to sketching on my iPad Mini at a live drawing session at the Society of Illustrators. I mixed it up from pose to pose alternating between the iPad and my regular sketchbook. It was a wonderful way of working that helped loosen me up. It also helped having the male performance artists work their magic! I enjoy transforming them into female fashion illustrations. It's fun working from my imagination as well as from life.

Two

I called this little sketch 'Two' as yes, there are two figures but each one was drawn in two minutes at the Society of Illustrators. It's always so much fun trying to capture the gesture of the models in short time.

Heather Huey Couture Headpieces

I recently had the opportunity to illustrate fabulous headpieces by designer Heather Huey. Heather works with stylists and designers during New York Fashion Week and her designs have been photographed by Steven Meisel and Tom Munro for Vogue Italia and Mario Testino for V Magazine to name a few. My interpretations of her headpieces were sketched from life in watercolor and finished digitally. See more on my Facebook page.

Tomboy BKLYN

Recently I worked with fashion designers, stylists and creators of TomboyBKLYN, Ashta Hunter and Elizabeth Benzing. Pairing various fashion apparel, footwear and accessories from the catwalk, I illustrated their styling visions for an editorial feature on their blog. Being part of this creative team was inspiring and great fun! For more illustrations and features check out their blog.

Illustrated Fall Trends

I was recently asked to create some illustrations, highlighting some key fall trends. It was fun keeping the shapes quite simple without the need for details and facial features. Sometimes less really is more.

Drawing Men

I really like to draw men. I like the angular lines rather than the soft more curved lines of women. However, I am asked to draw more women than men and when I sketch for practice, the models are mostly women. Here are two sketches drawn from life at the Society of Illustrators and finished digitally. Models Justin and Frank were a treat!
